Canon EOS 400D / Digital Rebel XTi

(2/10/07)
Summary: Canon changed the entire digital camera market when they revealed the EOS 300D. Launched in a huge way, they clearly expected it to be a big success. The ripples of that day forced prices lower and removed an entire category of camera (the 'prosumer' all-in-one compact). Canon put digital SLRs into the hands of people who would otherwise... Pros: ; Good color with selectable PictureStyles for different subject types; On-screen setting adjustment (ISO, WB, etc.) surprisingly quick and easy to use; Small and light but hand grip is still too small, can be uncomfortable for large hands; Updated nine point AF system, proved fast, accurate and still good in low light; Remote capture
Cons: ; Average automatic white balance performance, still very poor under incandescent light; Kit lens disappointing, better to buy body only and spend more on a good lens; Flash must be raised for AF assist; ISO, WB, Metering mode etc. not displayed on viewfinder status bar during change; No spot metering; Occasional under-exposure issue with

Digital Camera Resource Page Review: Canon Digital Rebel XTi

Summary: Read the full review
Pros: ; Robust performance, especially in terms of continuous shooting; Flash-based AF-assist lamp; very good low light focusing, even without using it; Very low noise, even at high ISOs; Capable RAW editor and remote camera control software included; Optional battery grip; Redeye not a problem; Dust reduction system; Large 2.5" LCD display;
Cons: ; No spot metering; No 2 second or custom self-timer (though mirror lockup is a workaround for the former); Below average battery life; Images on the soft side at default settings; Small, hard to hold body; feels too "plasticky" in my opinion
